A courageous train staff member who intervened to protect travelers during a multiple stabbing attack on a high-speed train has suffered critical injuries, police stated on Sunday.
CCTV footage reportedly depicts the employee attempting to stop the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire. Witnesses recounted a frightening 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with injured victims running through carriages.
The individual, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Authorities announced a significant event on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.
The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Five people have now been discharged from medical care.
A bystander filmed the individual brandishing a big knife and being shot with a stun device as he faced police on the station. He was allegedly heard shouting, "Kill me, kill me."
“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – especially the courageous member of train personnel whose relatives are being assisted by specialist officers,” said a senior police officer.
Rail unions were quick to commend employees and demand increased action. One union leader said he would be “seeking urgent discussions with government, train companies and police to ensure that we have the strongest available assistance, resources and robust protocols in place”.
Another union leader encouraged the train operator and government “to act quickly to examine security, to help the affected workers, and to ensure nothing like this happens again”.
The operator who halted the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been praised by association representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.
“He did not stop the service in the middle of two stops where it’s clearly difficult for the emergency services to reach, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the assistance was pretty much waiting,” stated a union official.
Police stated they got the initial emergency reports at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unscheduled stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.
An observer recounted at first wondering if the situation was a holiday joke, but quickly understood from people's faces that it was serious.
Authorities have confirmed there is nothing to indicate the event was a terrorist incident and have requested the community to come forward with any additional details.
Train operations on the affected route are anticipated to have delays until Monday, with travelers advised to defer their travel where possible.
