Steam Next Fest is currently underway, and enthusiasts have found plenty of entertaining indie games. Yet, one is particularly notable for its quirky concept. Named Unko Technica, this old-school styled side-scrolling game includes a character that is truly a dung trying to navigate to a restroom. As a fun fact, "Unko" translates to "poop."
Player controls is straightforward: just use a one button to leap. Throughout 150 challenges, encounter tough enemies and visit a store to buy customizations for your dung hero.
Time your jumps carefully, as a wrong move requires starting over. Leap on air pockets to propel yourself upward, traverse crumbling platforms, and activate triggers to reveal hidden paths. Earn coins and use them on challenging levels in which gameplay gets crazy.
Graphically, the game shows off eye-catching level designs and a killer music score. Its minimalist visual style of shifting abstract forms evokes memories of fans of beloved games like Earthbound.
Even though tough to name similar titles where you are a piece of feces, video games have long incorporated fecal matter. For example, in Death Stranding, players craft explosives from protagonist waste. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved use dung as plant food. Naturally, fecal references shows up a lot in Obsidian's role-playing game The Stick of Truth.
Regardless of its silly idea, Unko Technica has already earned impressive recognition, like being named best at Bandai Namco's GYAAR Studio in 2023. This trial version is available now on Steam, with the full game scheduled to arrive on PC this November.
